Salut Film and History Societies! This Friday arvo we’re uniting to watch Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 French silent historical film: The Passion of Joan of Arc! A historic landmark of cinema.

When: 3:00pm, Friday May 16
Where: Interactive Cinema Space, Room 353, Arts West - North Wing (Building 148a)
Free: PIZZA and DRINKS before the film! 🍕🥤

The version we’ll be watching is the restored original cut, in 24fps, as accompanied by the Voices of Light musical composition.

In 1431, Jeanne d'Arc (Renée Jeanne Falconetti, giving one of the greatest, most effectively expressive performances of all time) is placed on trial on charges of heresy, and the ecclesiastical jurists attempt to force her to recant her claims of holy visions.

Based on transcripts of the actual trial, as fate would have it, the film’s release mirrored in some ways its content, with the original cut being criticised and partially censored by clerical and government authorities, before the film negative was lost shortly after in a fire. A copy of the original cut, however, was found in 1981 by a janitor in a closet at a Norwegian mental institution. A miracle.

Come along for a spiritual cinematic experience! After the movie, we'll head to the pub for discussion and drinks. 🍻
