Yalda, or “Shab-e Yalda”, is an ancient Persian festival celebrated on the longest night of the year, usually around December 20–21. It marks the winter solstice (in northern hemisphere, spring equinox in southern hemisphere) and symbolises the triumph of light over darkness as the days begin to grow longer afterward. The celebration reflects themes of hope, renewal, and the importance of togetherness. Traditional activities include reading poetry, especially poems by the classical Persian poet Hafez, storytelling, and sharing symbolic foods such as pomegranates, watermelon, and nuts, which represent rebirth, health, and warmth.
